Research Motivation

Amid the global focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), food waste has become an increasingly critical issue. Nearly one-third of all food produced is discarded before it even reaches the table, resulting not only in significant economic losses but also in increased environmental burden due to greenhouse gases emitted from decomposing food.

As members of the global community, we seek to take practical actions to mitigate food waste and integrate the concept of food conservation into daily life.

In modern household life, people often overlook ingredients stored deep in the refrigerator due to busy schedules, or experience food waste caused by unclear labeling and duplicate purchases. Traditional manual recording methods are tedious and difficult to maintain, leading to a recurring cycle of “buying food but forgetting to consume it.”

We aim to address this issue of information opacity by enhancing the visibility of refrigerator inventory, enabling more efficient and precise utilization of food resources.

With the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence technologies, we propose the development of the “Food Guardian” smart system. By integrating YOLOv8 image recognition with a LINE Bot notification mechanism, the system automates complex inventory management processes while incorporating intelligent recipe recommendations and expiration alerts.

Through the power of technology, we aim to lower the barriers to food management, help users establish healthier eating habits, and achieve a smart lifestyle centered on “precision production and precision consumption.”
